Because it was raining and cold, we worked on inside projects. We decided that we would leave the final section of the ceiling for another day and give Carlo a break from the strain of working on the ladder for 10 more hours. He decided to work on trimming out the bedroom windows and door.
Although Dad is gone – he really seemed to step up and help us this trip. It started with needing a shoehorn, which he left at the cabin. Then when Carlo worked on the trim, Dad’s table saw and router were great to have. Dad would be amazed at the transformation that has been made to the cabin and how helpful he was! While Carlo routed, and ripped and cut – I had tasks of my own. I decided to put up the pine tongue and groove slats to the right of the fireplace. Back to cutting and measuring and nailing and yep…tripping. I tripped on the hose for the nail gun. Now this time I fell out of my red plastic shoes. I guess I can’t win.
This time it was just a stumble, but count it as a trip!!! My task was going great…before I knew it, I was past where I started and heading down the wall, past the window and now toward the corner. The boards were going up like magic. Carlo and I took a small break to visit with Paul who stopped by for his cup of coffee. We missed him the day before when he stopped by earlier than we woke up.
We broke for lunch a bit later and G & B joined us for KFC. While we were eating, G told us about the red squirrel that was under the cabin. Let me say, I am not a fan of wildlife inside. I’m not sure if it snuck in or broke in and they never said if it was gone. I just hope it’s not there when I have to go under there! Funny thing, with all the talk of the possible floods, I noticed the number of squirrels that
were around 2 weeks ago seemed to have diminished as well as the bird population. Hmmmm…do they know something we don’t? Like time to find higher ground?G & B took off for the day, I finished my project with the walls. I turned the corner to work over the window, when I stepped on the dining room bench and it tilted up! Good thing Carlo was there to stop it and I was able to get back on the step of the stool. Could you imagine getting beaned by a bench. This counts as the last thankfully missed accident. I put everything away and started cleaning while Carlo stalked the propane driver. Earlier in the day, we ordered fuel and were surprised to see the driver going down the
road. Hoping he would stop – Carlo waited for him, in the rain, holding a rake. He needed to look as though he wasn’t really stalking him! Bingo! We got fuel! So, inside I am surrounded by sawdust. I am trying to clean one room at a time and not track it all over. Then the Dirt Devil went on strike. The strike may have been brought on by the incident of sucking up the hot embers and starting the bag on fire a few months ago – but no matter what the reason, it wasn’t picking up the sawdust.
We went to dinner at Portage Family Restaurant – can’t miss another meal. It was barely 7:30 and the town was nearly deserted – maybe because it was a Monday or maybe because of the rain but we were about the only ones out. After we ate, we bought a new vacuum then headed down the muddy, puddly, sandy, pothole road back to the cabin to clean up the sawdust.
The cabin was clean, everything was in its place and we took our sore and achy bodies to bed and prayed for the pain to stop!
