Waking to difficulty walking – we were still achy from spending the previous two days climbing up and down ladders and stools. G & B arrived just in time for coffee and to work on the support beam. We busied ourselves with getting ready to head home. We had time to visit with G & B before leaving and hope they’re interested in the plumbing project that I added to “their” list!
Now it’s home to lots of laundry and getting ready to spend our vacation at O’Wich in May. Come back and visit then!

Just as I finished checking my email (no, not on a computer – on the iffy phone service we have), Garry and Bernie pulled up to begin working on installing the support beam for the cabin. This was a priority since the cabin was supported by a 4 x 4 – set on metal posts that were not attached to anything, but sat on some cinder blocks. (There was more cussing when this was discovered). So, we left them to their challenge and started on our list of things to do.
Because it was raining and cold, we worked on inside projects. We decided that we would leave the final section of the ceiling for another day and give Carlo a break from the strain of working on the ladder for 10 more hours. He decided to work on trimming out the bedroom windows and door. Although Dad is gone – he really seemed to step up and help us this trip. It started with needing a shoehorn, which he left at the cabin. Then when Carlo worked on the trim, Dad’s table saw and router were great to have. Dad would be amazed at the transformation that has been made to the cabin and how helpful he was! While Carlo routed, and ripped and cut – I had tasks of my own. I decided to put up the pine tongue and groove slats to the right of the fireplace. Back to cutting and measuring and nailing and yep…tripping. I tripped on the hose for the nail gun. Now this time I fell out of my red plastic shoes. I guess I can’t win. This time it was just a stumble, but count it as a trip!!! My task was going great…before I knew it, I was past where I started and heading down the wall, past the window and now toward the corner. The boards were going up like magic.
Carlo and I took a small break to visit with Paul who stopped by for his cup of coffee. We missed him the day before when he stopped by earlier than we woke up.
We broke for lunch a bit later and G & B joined us for KFC. While we were eating, G told us about the red squirrel that was under the cabin. Let me say, I am not a fan of wildlife inside. I’m not sure if it snuck in or broke in and they never said if it was gone. I just hope it’s not there when I have to go under there! Funny thing, with all the talk of the possible floods, I noticed the number of squirrels that were around 2 weeks ago seemed to have diminished as well as the bird population. Hmmmm…do they know something we don’t? Like time to find higher ground?
G & B took off for the day, I finished my project with the walls. I turned the corner to work over the window, when I stepped on the dining room bench and it tilted up! Good thing Carlo was there to stop it and I was able to get back on the step of the stool. Could you imagine getting beaned by a bench. This counts as the last thankfully missed accident. I put everything away and started cleaning while Carlo stalked the propane driver. Earlier in the day, we ordered fuel and were surprised to see the driver going down the road. Hoping he would stop – Carlo waited for him, in the rain, holding a rake. He needed to look as though he wasn’t really stalking him! Bingo! We got fuel!
So, inside I am surrounded by sawdust. I am trying to clean one room at a time and not track it all over. Then the Dirt Devil went on strike. The strike may have been brought on by the incident of sucking up the hot embers and starting the bag on fire a few months ago – but no matter what the reason, it wasn’t picking up the sawdust.
We went to dinner at Portage Family Restaurant – can’t miss another meal. It was barely 7:30 and the town was nearly deserted – maybe because it was a Monday or maybe because of the rain but we were about the only ones out. After we ate, we bought a new vacuum then headed down the muddy, puddly, sandy, pothole road back to the cabin to clean up the sawdust. The cabin was clean, everything was in its place and we took our sore and achy bodies to bed and prayed for the pain to stop!

Sunday was a good day – or so it started! After breakfast, we started the ceiling in the bedroom. Because the ceiling is vaulted, (that’s what we’ll call it) there are three sections – two are angled and one is flat. So – please envision the three sections. Thank you. We started out with section number one (an angled section) and it went up perfect. I was like a driven woman cutting wood – until, you guessed it, I almost took a derf. (luckily just another trip). This time, while running crazy back and forth, cutting and measuring, I tripped on the outdoor mat, stopped only when my head hit the 4 x 4 that holds the roof up and then I was slightly off balance. I could see this as an ugly event, but thank goodness my head stopped me from flipping off the porch. Now, back to more cutting – after I move the mat! The pieces went up so great in this first section that we should’ve seen it as an indicator of what would come. After we enjoyed lunch and oohed and aahed at our efforts, we moved on to angle number two – this is the part where we are reminded that the cabin is not plumb. The cabin is not square. The cabin is not level. The cabin has a difference of almost 4 inches from one wall to another and we may have cussed out the previous owners a time or two (or more). Let me add that section number two took twice as long as section one not to mention that Carlo was on a ladder for 10 hours AND working over his head. These items equate to sore arms, sore shoulders, sore legs, sore feet, short fuses and a need for me to perform a minor surgery on myself. Although I was attired with safety goggles, I forgot the ever important work gloves. I had several slivers, but one little bugger broke off…here’s the surgery part – I had to cut away some skin from my palm to get closer to the sliver. I was reminded that this was a dumb idea, but it worked out and the sliver was removed. As the evening came to an end, both angled sections were finished, the beds were made, the house was a horrible mess and we were too tired to go to dinner. So we finished the pizza and donuts and here is where we called it a day!

I am keeping an eye on this barn and silo. I love old barns. When we were in Michigan, we were watching a barn and took several photos of it. Then one day it was gone. I was glad we watched it - although it decayed. Now were watching this one!

We noticed the river was rather high and were very concerned about the road in to the cabin, as well as the cabin and our surrounding property. We arrived to a semi-flooded road – which means a lot of snow has melted. And driving around the huge puddles was fierce. The Chicago potholes have nothing on the O’Wich cavernous road.
Then there’s talk of the coming floods. We hope it doesn’t happen…hate to look for our cabin down river. Speaking of the river – yes, it was high!
We opened up the house and unloaded the truck. This is a regular occurrence. I don’t think we’ve ever – outside of the very first visit prior to buying – gone up with an empty vehicle. We sure seem to haul of lot of stuff. I think we need an addition!
We then headed off to pick up the loft stairs we ordered from Portage Lumber and for groceries from Pierce’s. We won a dollar on our frequent shopper scratch off card.
After getting things situated it was time for a burger and pizza from Tamarack. So glad we found this place. Here is a funny story – upon leaving the restaurant, I found out it would be my weekend of trips and a fall! Yep, I ran out of bench as I shimmied my way from the table and landed flat-a$$ on the floor. The “to-go” box didn’t open and even landed right side up! Only one person, other than Carlo, seemed to notice, but I refused eye contact after the first time! I dusted myself off and limped out to the Tahoe!
