April 2, 3 & 4

What a restful but UN-productive weekend! Dad went along and had a great time. He couldn't believe how quiet it was.
We started with lunch at Culvers and then shopped at Wal-Mart before hitting the Burma Road - this is the mile long road from the highway to the cabin that you try to use as least as possible!

When we first got there we had to unload the car...this is always a huge task since we always take a lot of "stuff" every time we go to O'Wich! And there wasn't much room to put the stuff inside, since all the furniture was in the middle of the living room - waiting for the painting project to be completed. And the bedroom is still our storage room as well as a bunk room - and of course the kitchen had the grill in the center of the room...so, next we needed to organize!

Rockers: Outside ~ Grill: Outside ~ Wood to finish the bedroom walls: Stood up and secured to the wall ~ Park bench: Assembled [thanks Lynne] & [Rick].

Since O'Wich is described as some as 'Labor Camp', I assigned the above mentioned tasks to Dad, which I had hoped he could do alone so I could start step 2 of a 3 step painting technique to the living room. Once Dad's list was complete...I was able to start painting. The brush technique did not turn out as planned. The glazed finish covered the base coat rather than allowing it to show through. I couldn't do anything about it for 24 hours...hmmmmm.

On day 2, the septic guys (their motto ~ Your Poop Is Our Business) came out and cleaned the tank. Good news...although small, the tank is in good working order.

Since it rained most of the days, we were unable to seal the wood for the bedroom. Since it was cold, I couldn't clean up the fallen branches. However, the next day, I could consider step 3 of this horrible painting finish. I opted out of the that and pulled out the trusty Saran Wrap. I used the darker color mixed with the glaze and applied it to the walls. Dad was in charge of dispensing the Saran Wrap and the garbage - Who else????? Later that evening we put up the border and moved all the furniture back. Here are the before, during and after photos. And an extreme close up for detail!

We wrapped up the day with a fantastic BBQ of ribs and corn, mmmmmmmm good!

Day 3 was dedicated to Verizon installing a land line. New phones charged and ready for calls, we waited. One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock. Tick tock tick tock. Calling into Verizon, I find out that a 1:00 pm install means 1:00 to 4:00. Tick tock tick tock. With my cell phone on its last bar, Carlo helps with all of the communications to Verizon. With every phone call, and there were many - I spoke with Candace and Sharon and Brenda while Carlo spoke to Tracy and Kelly and Jackie and Sean. As each person assured us everything is fine and we would have service by the end of the day, I decided to close up the house. Heck, it was almost 5:00 pm. During Carlo's final call with Sean, he decided to NOT give him any information since he wasn't on the account and that I needed to add him - so, at 4:45 I called to speak to Sean. Finally I got through to a person at 5:20 and was told that office was closed for the day! Just as I was explaining everything to the person that finally picked up the phone, Randy, the Verizon Tech pulled in the drive. First, he apologizes, can't be mad at him - he explains that luckily he is familiar with the area and knew where the cabin was. He further mentions that the directions I gave the order department never made it to him nor did my correct phone number, which is why no one ever called me! Funny thing about area codes!!!! He did mention that the number he was given was to a bar or restuarant and their tag line is; 'You kill it, we'll grill it'. After a lengthy conversation with Randy, it is most probable that service there is impossible. He drove down to the neighbors and they mentioned they wanted a phone too, but Verizon wasn't willing to absorb the cost of over a mile of cable. Randy said he'd speak with someone and get back to me to see if the Portage office is willing to consider it.

So, day 3 was a bust, but I'd rather be there in the peace and quiet than in the hustle and bustle of home! Our trip was fun, the drive was safe and I enjoyed spending the time with Dad.
